It is a great idea to frequently weigh your dog to keep an eye on his body weight. Weight can quickly sneak up on a dog and can be detrimental to your dog’s health. Our staff can help choose a nutrition plan to keep your pet healthy and have a long life.
When is a dog considered to be overweight?
We use the body condition chart to determine whether your dog is in its ideal body condition. It is a scale of 1 to 5 with five being severely obese. Your veterinary will check your dog’s body condition during your dog’s yearly physical exam and keep a close eye on your dog’s weight. Also, you can try to feel your dog’s ribs, you should be able to feel them without pushing into your dog, but you should not be able to see their ribs either. Our veterinarian can show you how to do this correctly.
Are some breeds prone to obesity?
All dogs can become obese, but some breeds are more likely to gain weight like Retrievers, Pugs, and Shih Tzu’s for example.
Why should my dog have a weight loss consultation at the clinic?
A doctor or nutritional counsellor can make the proper diet recommendations to help your dog with its weight loss journey.
